Café Exploring | Shutter and Brew

Today I took a much needed break from uni and did some well overdue café exploring with one of my Honours gal pals around our side of town. Located on the corner of Newman Road and Main Ave, Shutter & Brew is yet another awesome Northside shop turned café that oozes cool on every level. Photography enthusiasts out there this could quite possible be your new fave place and brunching connoisseurs you may be joining them, read on to find out why!

From the outset, Shutter and Brew is a teeny place. With a few stools outside, it would be hard to miss whizzing past on a main road but if you take a little turn down the avenue you will be greeted with a rather adorable shopfront bearing the cafés logo (some might fine typography work there might I add!) and a open door. Once you step inside, you know you have found a utterly cool spot. Walls are adorned with photography for sale, a long bench sits prettily along the windowsill as well as a few two-seater tables. In the corner a range of great gifts for photography enthusiasts are creatively displayed ranging from from camera-themed cushions and camera straps to up-cycled camera lens cuffs, timber toy cameras, adorbs camera-shaped earrings, frames and of course art to purchase. It’s hard to resist not buying something or wanting to take a photo of everything in there. Ironic, isn’t it?

With a short but sweet menu and a cabinet full of well stocked cakes, slices, gourmet sandwiches, loaded croissants and deli quiches there is something for every hungry visitor, whether you choose to dine in or take-away. We weren’t going to skimp on brunch so first up we tried the avocado on corn bread with tomato relish, Japanese mayo, dukkah and lemon. Add haloumi of course and what a flavour packed mouthful! This is seriously one unusual yet extremely delicious avo offering.

Next up, sweets. Stressed is dessert spelt backwards after all. I went for a classic orange and poppy seed cake (layered too might I add!) with luscious cream cheese frosting. Perfectly moist and full of citrus goodness. No wonder this cake is a classic. My brunching partner went for another classic caramel slice, perfectly layered with chocolate ganache topping and a crumbly sweet biscuit base.

Of course to refuel ourselves we needed a caffeine hit. Coffee lovers at Shutter and Brew can choose between Cleanskin’s Old School blend and rotating single origins, while tea drinkers can select T2 loose leaf tea in flavours like French Earl Grey, Melbourne Breakfast and Strawberry and Cream. Or why not try a specialty hot chocolate by Melbourne’s Mörk Chocolate or locally-made iced tea by the Ice Tea Man. Plenty of beverages are on hand to quench your thirst!

Shutter and Brew only gets cooler by offering photography workshops, photographers for hire and soon to be weekend crafternoons. What a fantastic idea! I know where I will be heading to procrastinate my thesis from now on.

If you are around Wavell Heights give this little spot a go. Great things come in small packages and this is no exception, love your work Shutter and Brew- I’ll be back!

Stay hungry,
