Neat Eats | Jimmy’s on the Mall

Brisbane City sports a lot of hidden foodie gems. You just have to know where to look. Yes, I guess the CBD is no New Farm, Fortitude Valley or West End but it doesn’t need to be. There are a heap of places that are totally stepping up in terms of neat hangouts all in close proximity to the mall. Perfect post-shopping pit stops really. Jimmy’s on the Mall is one such place. Since opening in 1982, Jimmy’s has offered Brisbanites breakfast, lunch and dinner 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That’s a whole lot of foodie lovin’. Situated in the middle of one of Australia’s busiest pedestrian mall, JOTM is Brisbane’s longest established outdoor restaurant having served millions of Brisbane locals and tourists. I have to admit, I never once visited the old Jimmy’s. To me, it was sort of a place that you just walked past. That was until it got a super cool revamp with food and decor to match! Now it’s impossible to ignore and I had to try it out. Let me tell you why.

After 32 years operating in Queen Street Mall, Mantle Group renovated Jimmy’s on the Mall in 2014 and the new venue opened in early November. And what a difference! The new Jimmy’s on the Mall is spread over two split levels (classy!) and includes vibrant green living walls with fairy lights (adorbs!) a clever retractable roof to ensure the venue is ideal for all climates (smart!) and high quality finishes and surfaces throughout the restaurant and bar. It’s totally the place you’d happily be able to chill out in after work or uni. On our visit we went up to the top level and scored a great table which sports awesome views of the mall. It’s quite fun watching the hustle and bustle of the city whiz past you from all the way up there. Too cool. The kitchen downstairs is also partially open so you can take a peek at the chefs food if you are walking past. With bars on both levels, you’ll never be left parched either.

Okay, let’s talk about the food. With menus split up for upper and lower deck, there is an array of eats sure to satisfy all palettes. At Jimmy’s you will find light entrees like mushroom & truffle arancini with porcini puree, parmesan and basil oil  or a charcuterie platter of duck liver parfait, cured meats, farmhouse cheeses, pickles, muscatels, dips, marinated olives, garlic, toasted bread. Feel like something more substantial? There’s also lghter meals perfect for lunching such as the slow braised pork roll with apple sauce, coleslaw or a Thai chicken salad complete with picked leaves, chilli, ruby grapefruit, peanuts, mustard fruits, tomatoes, sesame & ginger dressing. My brunching partner went for a classic, the chicken Caesar sandwich with grilled chicken, bacon, cos lettuce, egg, Caesar dressing. So good and such a good serving size as well. I had a beautiful local buffalo mozzarella salad with fresh basil, crisp garlic croutons, assorted heirloom tomatoes and drizzled with vincotto. Stunning and presented beautifully too! It was perfect for a hot summer day and that mozzarella was SUBLIME. Perfectly creamy and just falling apart, it was a joy to eat. We didn’t have enough room for dessert but you can expect to see some awesome creations such as the hazelnut & chocolate tart with raspberry, chocolate soil and vanilla bean ice-cream or a tropical number of  coconut & lime pannacotta with pineapple, tuille and a lychee sorbet. Yep, so going back here for dessert. No questions asked.

With a revamp like this, Jimmy’s will continue to be an icon of Brisbane for all the right reasons. Check it out for some delicious CBD eats and grab a spot on the top deck, I promise you’ll love it!

Stay hungry,

S.
